The most ambitious project in the scene has one glorious peculiarity: this project has never written anything to an FM-1 — the literal quote from its documentation. For now, all of Lunar Modulator exists as a virtual FM-1 in the browser, playable and sounding, because ip2k refused to touch real hardware until (1) having his JieLi dev kit and (2) having proven a byte-identical backup/restore. The right kind of ethics.
What it does
A multi-engine modular groovebox with 13+ engines in the simulator: Macro VA ×2, six-operator FM, FM6 (DX7/msfa), a 47-waveform engine, FM metallic percussion, analog-style drums — plus the ports of X0X (the 303 as Acid Bass, the 909 as Comet Kit, the 808 as Crater Kit) and Mutable code (Plaits, Braids, Rings, Clouds) everywhere. Four sounds at once with two inserts each, a mod rack of 8 modules and 32 cables, 22 effects. And on the roadmap: the Orbital Dock, a browser-based firmware builder with a module marketplace.
Status
Upcoming, with daily momentum since September 6. An underrated extra: its docs/ is the best
public map of the entire FM-1 reverse-engineering effort. The full story in
the ecosystem.
